Every day the Cincinnati Fisher House provides a comfortable place to stay for veterans and their families from all over Ohio.
A Fisher House is a temporary residence for families of loved ones receiving care at a nearby military or VA medical center. There are 57 Fisher Houses across the nation. The program was begun in 1990, and since that time, according to the Fisher House website, it has offered more than three million days of lodging to more than 160,000 families.
Volunteers come to the Cincinnati house, located at 3200 Vine St., with the goal of giving back to people like Navy veteran Jason Smith, right, who stays at the house while recuperating from cancer treatments. By providing support and friendship to each other, volunteers, veterans and their families find they are creating a true feeling of a home away from home.
